I’m Manuel Oliver, father to Joaquin Oliver and founder of Change The Ref.

Joaquin was one of the 17 people murdered at the school shooting in Parkland, Florida. For me, my wife Patricia and everyone who knew and loved him, my son remains an incredible source of joy and inspiration in our lives.

Yesterday was Joaquin “Guac” Oliver’s 22nd birthday. Since 2020, we’ve hosted “Guacathon” to celebrate Joaquin’s life and raise money for gun violence prevention to make sure that no parent has to lose their child in this horrific and completely preventable way.

This is a hurt that never goes away, but Joaquin's birthday is a moment for joy. We’re not having a moment of silence. We’re having a party!

This year, Guacathon will take place over several days in the Metaverse. We’re hosting a block party filled with all of the things Joaquin loves: art, music and basketball.
