Here’s a little bit of history we made last week that you may have missed, John:
For the first time in the history of the Senate, I chaired a hearing on decriminalizing cannabis at the federal level.
States across the country have legalized cannabis medically and recreationally and have benefited from a windfall of tax revenue while attracting new businesses and entrepreneurs.
Yet despite the fact that marijuana is used at comparable rates by white and Black Americans, Black people are arrested nearly 4 times as much as their white peers for marijuana possession — while lagging far behind in obtaining business licenses for the medical and legal markets.
I believe it’s time to end the prohibition on marijuana and pursue economic and restorative justice for the communities it has harmed. That’s what it will take to reckon with our past and the damage wrought on communities of color for decades.
It’s time to repair the damage from the disastrous War on Drugs. If you agree, add your name to my petition calling on the Senate to move forward with cannabis decriminalization.
Thank you for joining me and taking action.
With love and gratitude,
Cory
