2022 is the coolest summer of the rest of your life!

"The UN secretary general, António Guterres, has described the record profits of oil and gas companies as immoral and urged governments to introduce a windfall tax, using the money to help those in the most need.

Speaking in New York on Wednesday, Guterres said the “grotesque greed” of the fossil fuel companies and their financial backers had led to the combined profits of the largest energy companies in the first quarter of this year hitting almost $100bn (£82bn).

“It is immoral for oil and gas companies to be making record profits from this energy crisis on the backs of the poorest people and communities, at a massive cost to the climate,” he said." - The Guardian ([link removed]) , August 3, 2022

OUTDOORS IN THE BEAUTIFUL RIVERLAND TENT
From 350MKE Co-founder and member Julie Enslow:

Dear friends,

This coming Sat. evening, August 6, is the annual commemoration of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. Once again Peace Action Wisconsin is presenting our annual Lanterns for Peace event and I am inviting you to join us.

This year we will gather at the Riverside Park Urban Ecology Center in their new outdoor tent. After an hour of Japanese lantern making and other family activities from 6pm to 7pm, there will be a program of music and speakers. Both George Martin and I have been invited to speak. At dusk we will float some of the candlelit lanterns in the little pond in front of the Ecology Center and then process with the lanterns to Locust Street and back.

With the war in Ukraine putting the US and Russia into serious confrontation, analysts warn we are closer than ever before to a nuclear war. As we remember the victims of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, we also recognize the need for a negotiated, diplomatic settlement of the war in Ukraine before it escalates to the use of nuclear weapons and potentially, WWIII.

We hope you can be with us on Hiroshima Day, Sat. Aug. 6.

Peace,
Julie
