John,
This might be the single most outrageous and dubious scheme we've ever
heard to keep Black men behind bars.
Incarcerated Black men in a Florida jail were told by the government to
register to vote — now they are being given additional jail time for it.
10 men were charged with election crimes and 4 have already been
convicted.
Some of these men were close to finishing their sentences. But now,
because of guidance from government officials, they could be spending at
least a YEAR or more in jail.

must drop the charges immediately so that these men don't spend even one
more additional day in prison for voting.

In 2018, Florida voters overwhelmingly passed an amendment that restored
the right to vote to most state residents with felony convictions.
But then, Republicans quickly made it more difficult once again, including
a restriction specifying the incarcerated person could only vote if they
first paid off any money they owed for committing their crimes — a
restriction that disproportionately would affect Black people in jail.
The penalty for registering or voting without paying? A felony charge for
voter fraud and more jail time.
And with the guidance of government officials, that is exactly what the 10
men received. The state should be at fault, NOT these men.
At best, it's white supremacy at work to keep Black men incarcerated as
long as possible. At worst, this was entrapment.
Both end in these men spending more time in prison for a felony that they
were tricked into.
Either way, we can’t allow these men to serve more time in county jail.
The government officials who duped them into voting should be the ones
held responsible for taking advantage of their positions of power.
