*Celebrating the Old and the New*

A very happy summer to you all! It has been a while since we have communicated with you through our newsletter "Past Matters", so please bear with this rather long report! There has been a lot happening at the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission over the last few months. In April, the Friends celebrated the 25th?anniversary of the founding of the organization at a gala at the Bullock Texas State History Museum. We?were honored to present the inaugural Julian Read Award for Philanthropy in Preservation to Texas Historical Commission Chairman John L. Nau, III, for his vision, leadership, and generosity in furthering the cause of preservation, not just in Texas but nationally.?

Meet the 2022 Preservation Scholars Helping to Preserve Texas History

Preservation Scholars 2022

The?Preservation Scholars Program [ [link removed] ]?places college students in paid summer internships with the Texas Historical Commission. This donor-funded program aims to increase the diversity of voices in the Texas historical narrative by placing students from underrepresented cultural and ethnic backgrounds in 10-week long summer internship positions at the THC. The goal of the program is to ensure that the varied and complex stories of Texas history can be shared by professionals who not only reflect the diverse population of the past whose stories they represent, but also the diverse population of the state today that they share the stories with.

We are very grateful to our supporters of this program?"*John L. Nau, III*",?"*Nicola Contreras*",?"*Robert Oliver*",?"*Sally Anne Schmidt*", and the?"*Fondren Fund for Texas of the National Trust for Historic Preservation*", for their support of this program. Thanks to generous support from these donors, the Friends of the Texas Historical Commission was able to offer seven positions in 2022.

Each student spends ten weeks working on a preservation project under the supervision of THC staff. We are thrilled to introduce you to the?*Preservation Scholars Class of 2022*?and their contributions to historic preservation!

A Gift Many Years in the Making

Lana Hughes Nelson
THC Friends Celebrate the Legacy of Lana Hughes Nelson

In January 2022, following 18 months of working with representatives of the Neely Hughes Trust, the FTHC received an incredibly generous endowment gift of $525,000 from the Trust. The Trust was set up following the passing of Ms. Lana Hughes Nelson in April 2012. It was Lana?s wish to support the preservation, in perpetuity, of cemeteries in and around Henderson County. To that end, and to secure the lasting legacy of Lana Hughes Nelson, the gift from the Neely Hughes Trust is directed toward the creation of the Lana Hughes Nelson Endowment Fund for Cemetery Preservation, and the establishment of the Lana Hughes Nelson Cemetery Preservation Education Program Fund.
