‌ ‌ ‌ View as Webpage For Immediate Release: December 10, 2019 For Information: 573-635-5110 MISSOURI RIGHT TO LIFE PRESS RELEASE PRO-LIFE ARGUMENTS TO PROHIBIT ABORTION FUNDING HEARD IN MISSOURI SUPREME COURT, U.S. SUPREME COURT UPHOLDS REQUIRED ULTRASOUNDS BEFORE AN ABORTION The following statement is from Steve Rupp, President of Missouri Right to Life: Today, the Missouri Supreme Court heard a challenge to the Missouri Legislature’s denial of state funds going to Planned Parenthood. Solicitor General John Sauer of the Attorney General’s office presented the case in defense of the State of Missouri’s right to defund Planned Parenthood. Planned Parenthood continues to seek any way possible to access our tax dollars to fund their abortion business and pro-life leaders are working to prevent funding abortion with public monies. While the Missouri Supreme Court is in the process of deciding whether legislators have the right to prevent our tax dollars from going to the abortion industry, the U.S. Supreme Court decided on another pro-life bill. Yesterday, the U.S. Supreme Court decided to let stand a lower court’s decision on Kentucky’s “Display and Describe” law that requires an abortionist to show a mother the ultrasound and describe her unborn child to her prior to the abortion. This court decision sets the standard allowing other states to pass similar legislation. Earlier this year, judges from the 6th Circuit ruled that the information gleaned from an ultrasound was “pertinent” to a woman’s decision-making. “The information conveyed by the ultrasound image, its description, and the audible beating fetal heart gives a patient greater knowledge of the unborn life inside her,” wrote Judge John Bush, a President Donald Trump appointee to the 6th Circuit. “This also inherently provides the patient with more knowledge about the effect of an abortion procedure: it shows her what, or whom, she is consenting to terminate.” Missouri has passed informed consent legislation that includes the opportunity for a woman to view an ultrasound prior to an abortion. We encourage our Missouri pro-life legislators to advance legislation to increase protections through a required ultrasound for expectant mothers prior to an abortion. Pray for our elected officials, statewide leaders and judges as they work through the law to protect women and unborn children.
