John- It’s happening across the country - Pelosi’s campaign machine is spending millions of dollars to influence elections. But I’m not talking about general elections where it’s Democrats vs Republicans. I’m talking about our Republican primary elections. That’s right. The Democrats' latest tactic is to hit swing districts with television spots that boost fringe, far-right candidates who have virtually no chance of winning in the general election. The most recent example is their attempts to primary GOP Congressman Peter Meijer in Michigan’s 3rd Congressional district. He’s a West Point graduate and Iraq war veteran. He’s a commonsense conservative who represents a district that was redistricted into a seat where Democrats hold the advantage… it’s currently a D+3 seat and Democrats see it as one of their best pick-up opportunities in the country. Meijer is likely the only Republican who can hold onto this seat, and his main opponent, John Gibbs, will likely lose it if he wins the Republican primary. That’s exactly why Pelosi’s Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee – the DCCC – is spending $425,000 on television ads this week to boost John Gibbs. The ads paint Gibbs as “too conservative” for Michigan and Trump’s “handpicked candidate.” That plays well in a Republican primary – and if this were a red district it would play well in the general election too. But this fight is in a true swing district. Recent polling showed the Democrat challenger beating Gibbs by 10 points if he were the Republican nominee in November. You can see why the DCCC is so committed to getting rid of commonsense conservative Peter Meijer. He is the only chance we’ve got to keep this swing district in Republican hands. Democrats repeated this political trick in other races too. It happened in the Colorado GOP U.S. Senate primary race last month, where Democrats spent over $5 million on television, digital, and direct mail to elevate far-right Republican state senator Ron Hanks. Hanks raised a little more than $124,000, which is nothing in a U.S. Senate race, and he was the only Republican in the Colorado State Legislature to vote against criminalizing a sexual relationship between 18-year old students and teachers. Hanks ended up losing the primary to the actual front runner, Republican businessman Joe O’Dea, but not before Democrats tried desperately to help Hanks win. Democrat dark money groups relentlessly lied about Joe in mailers to Republican households - calling Joe “anti-gun” when the truth is he was the only candidate in the race endorsed by the NRA. And over the past few months the Democrats used the same playbook in the GOP governors’ primaries for Colorado, Illinois, and Pennsylvania. Far-right candidates – none of whom have a real shot at winning general elections in a swing state – are being propped up with millions of dollars in television ads by Democrat organizations. More than $1.5 million was spent by the Democratic Governors Association to boost the weaker candidate in the GOP primary for Governor of Colorado - a man named Greg Lopez who had been arrested in 1993 for assaulting his pregnant wife. The frontrunner for the GOP governor nomination was University of Colorado Regent Heidi Ganahl. Heidi is currently the only statewide elected Republican in Colorado and she outraised Lopez 8 to 1. Heidi ultimately won the nomination, but it was closer than it should have been. In Illinois, more than $32 million was spent by Democrats to boost the weaker candidate in the GOP primary for governor. The front runner in the GOP primary was the mayor of Aurora, Illinois, Mayor Richard Irvin. Irvin is a veteran, former prosecutor, and black conservative who emphasized fighting crime, cutting taxes, and cleaning up spending. Irvin would have made a formidable Republican candidate against far-left Governor Pritzker in November, and Democrats knew that, which is why they spent millions to help the far-right candidate in the GOP primary. Democrats succeeded when Irvin lost the GOP primary to state Senator Darren Bailey, who is unlikely to win the general election. In the Pennsylvania GOP primary for governor, Democrats spent over $800,000 on ads to boost far-right state Senator Doug Mastriano. Mastriano won the primary, and now he’s trailing in the polls against Democrat Attorney General Josh Shapiro. We cannot let Democrats continue chipping away at what should be a strong, governing conservative majority in this country after the November election.
