Did you see the news coming out of Fairfax, John? Because of vital work done by the Virginia Legislature, our state has been able to save some truly important lives: 4,000 Beagles. John, these poor animals were born and bred in the Virginia-based Envigo facility because corporations prioritize greed over innocent lives, and we almost let them get away with it. Unfortunately, this practice is common across our country, and it needs to stop. That’s why, this past April, the Virginia Legislature came together to pass the “Beagle Bills,” which aimed at penalizing companies, like Envigo, whose sole purpose is based in animal cruelty. But truthfully, John, we shouldn’t have needed to get to this place to begin with. Companies like Envigo should have never been able to open their doors in our state. All Virginians, both human and our furry friends, deserve to be treated with respect and love. As a dog lover and guardian, I applaud the shuttering of this laboratory of cruelty, and I know we need to do much better. Wins like this are a critical reminder of the impact our legislature can have on the lives of not just Virginia’s human citizens, but our furry ones too. I could not imagine my precious dog Popi in a lab or a puppy mill, and as a state Senator, I will do everything in my power to make sure no other animal suffers in a place like the Envigo lab.
