John – Four years later, I still remember how incredibly surreal this moment felt.

Animated gif of the moment Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez learned she had won her primary on June 26, 2018. Alexandria is seen wearing a Black blazer with white trim over a Black dress. She is surrounded by supporters in a New York City bar where the crowd had gathered for her watch party. A reporter for Spectrum News pulls her into frame to interview her for a reaction to the results as they appear on screen.

Much of our BNC family was on the ground in New York for the final week of GOTV for Alexandria’s 2018 primary. I wasn’t able to go in person, but like everyone else on the team I was working around the clock to squeeze every last vote out of what we all knew was a long shot campaign.

And then it happened. It took a massive coalition of organizing partners and an army of grassroots volunteers, but we did it. We got AOC elected.

Alexandria was one of the very first candidates BNC recruited to run for Congress. When I was drafting her campaign launch materials in May 2017 as a Comms volunteer for Brand New Congress, I had no idea that 13 months later we would instantly unseat the fourth most powerful Democrat in the House.

The reporter shown above asked her, moments after learning she had won, “What about people who say you’re too radical?”

Alexandria answered without hesitation: “There is nothing radical about moral clarity.”

That is the essence of AOC. It’s how she won this seat in 2018. It’s how she’s moving policy in Congress today. And it’s how we build the movement we need to win. We lead with moral clarity.

AOC is up for reelection again next month, and we need her many (many) critics among the political establishment and the far right to know that we still have her back. Will you split a contribution between Brand New Congress and AOC’s campaign today?

Since taking office in January 2019, AOC has championed over 900 pieces of legislation. More importantly, she has consistently led the dialogue on all the issues that matter to working class Americans – leading with moral clarity every time.

Most recently, she has pushed the Biden administration and her Democratic colleagues to move aggressively to restore and protect abortion rights – calling on the administration to lease federal land to abortion providers and exert other levers of executive authority to counter the right wing attack on our bodies.

AOC was the first prominent member of Congress to call out the Supreme Court’s legitimacy crisis, sparking a growing movement within the Democratic mainstream to reform the court. She was also one of the first representatives to call for the impeachment of justices who lied under oath in their confirmation hearings or abused their power on the bench.

Last week, AOC was one of 17 lawmakers arrested outside the Supreme Court at a rally for abortion rights, calling attention to the court’s overreach and the need for the Senate to act.

AOC and Rep. Ayanna Pressley are seen in a holding area with other lawmakers (including Cori Bush in the background) after being arrested for civil disobedience at a rally for abortion rights. AOC is being interviewed by a crowd of reporters gathered from behind a line of police tape separating the area.

This is hardly the first time AOC has used direct action to drive the conversation inside Congress. After winning the seat in 2018 and before she was even sworn in to office, AOC joined a youth-led sit-in for climate change at Nancy Pelosi’s office.

Then Representative-elect AOC standing in Nancy Pelosi’s office in November 2018, surrounded by youth activists holding a sit-in for climate change and demanding action from the soon-to-be Majority Leader.

She was heavily criticized by the career Democrats who felt the youngest woman ever elected to Congress didn’t “know her place.” But that never stopped her.

Within weeks of taking office in 2019, AOC partnered with Sen. Ed Markey to introduce the Green New Deal and in the process she fundamentally changed the conversation on Democratic policy for the climate crisis.

From her first day on the job, AOC has weathered constant criticism, demeaning attacks, threats to her safety from right-wing extremists, and demands to conform from the political establishment.

And she’s stood tall through all of it.

Alexandria believes a better world is possible – and so do we. Will you pitch in now to help Brand New Congress keep her in Congress?

Graphic featuring Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, pictured with a black blazer and black shirt. The caption reads: “Proud to be a member of the BNC slate since May 2017. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for House NY-14” In the upper right corner the year 2022 is marked and below that the words “Original Member''.

Alexandria proved that we CAN beat the odds and elect bold, working class progressives to fight for us. But since her victory the odds have gotten longer and the obstacles stacked higher against our candidates.

Progressives can no longer simply organize our way to victory. The movement needs money to win. Dark money groups are spending mountains of money to stop our candidates, and we can’t take anything for granted.

Join us now, and make sure we keep growing the BNC caucus.

In solidarity,

Cory Archibald
