JULY IS DISABILITY PRIDE MONTH!
Disability Pride Month marks the anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), signed into law in 1990, and celebrates disability as an identity by highlighting and sharing the experiences of the disabled community.
The month is a chance to share joy and pride that disabled people bring to their communities. Around 15% of the population is disabled, and this is a chance to educate people on how proud disabled people are of their identities, and how awareness and acceptance of disability will lead the way towards equity. However, this month is an important opportunity to call out how much needs to be done to make the world a more inclusive and accessible place for disabled people.
Every disabled person has a different experience of discrimination and oppression, and being othered. Often this experiences exist in the intersection of gender, race, class, and sexual orientation. Disabled people are often most affected when it comes to the attack on rights. Florida Rising fights for equity in our state, and fighting for equitable housing, reproductive rights and climate justice are part of the fight for disability rights.
This month as an organization, we will be highlighting stories and issues affecting disabled people, and talking about how our organization’s work in fields like climate justice and housing positively impact disabled people in our state.

VICTORY: Florida Power & Light has withdrawn a proposal that called for increased investment in fossil fuel infrastructure, paid by customers to increase profits based on a bogus “extreme winter” scenario. [[link removed]]
Represented by Earthjustice, Florida Rising submitted comments to reject Florida Power & Light’s recommended Ten-Year Site Plan. FPL’s withdrawal of the plan is a win for our climate justice advocacy and for all Floridians! Read more here. [[link removed]]
image of ... [[link removed]] Free Alethia Jones
The last two decades of Alethia Jones' life are a clear depiction of how Florida’s mass incarceration system fais the residents of Florida.
While on her way to recovery, Alethia made a mistake that cost her entire life. Instead of investments in communities that prevent crime and make reentry after incarceration possible, Florida’s three strikes rule has robbed families of their support systems and shown the heartless nature of the system that we are living in. It’s time to right at least one of the 1XX wrongs of people serving life in the FL justice system for drug offenses and Free Alethia Jones. WLRN: FPL says state Supreme Court should uphold increased rates. [[link removed]]
Florida Power & Light on Wednesday urged the state Supreme Court to reject challenges to a settlement that increased electric rates, arguing the controversial plan is in the “public interest.” Florida Rising, together with Floridians Against Increased Rates, the League of United Latin American Citizens of Florida and the Environmental Confederation of Southwest Florida challenged the commission’s approval of the settlement. Patch: Hundreds Of Tampa Residents Living In Squalor Face Eviction. [[link removed]]
COVID-19 money awarded to Hillsborough County and the city of Tampa for rental assistance isn't being distributed quickly enough to stave off the evictions. Robin Lockett, representing Florida Rising, said the city's code enforcement department told her repeatedly that the city doesn't have the authority to cite apartment complexes that fall under the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation's jurisdiction. "So now this slumlord with rat infestation, roaches, raw sewage, balconies about to fall down is charging these tenants excess fees. There's a real disconnect between all these departments that are supposed to be there to protect and regulate. Nobody talks to one another." Read more. [[link removed]]
Miami Herald: One Florida, two visions as Republicans and Democrats attend dueling Tampa conferences. [[link removed]]
After both the Democratic and Republican parties' conferences in Tampa last week,
senior political adviser for Florida Rising Dwight Bullard, said he believed Florida Democrats need to be more aggressive in explaining the value of public education and paint Republicans’ concerns with curriculum as a desire to maintain control. Read more. [[link removed]]
