Friends,

Let me tell you about a short conversation I just had.

I was knocking doors as part of our 1,000 Doors of Summer campaign (400 down; 600 to go).

It was roughly door 380.

I knock. Gentleman opens the door halfway.

I say hi and tell him I'm running to represent him in Congress.

He waits until I'm done and says, "Ok, thanks. Best of luck." He starts closing the door.

Then he stops, sticks his head out a bit, and asks, "Do you want to do the work – or do you want to be Mr. Outrageous?"

I said, "I want to do the work." He said "Great, that's what we need."

And that was it.

I've meditated on that a bit. Seems kind of profound as a summation of the divide in our politics.

So what does doing the work in Congress actually look like?

Same as any job you've ever had. Be honest, be practical, listen, care, work hard.

A little more specifically, here’s what it means to our team:

We run a campaign built around actually listening to our constituents.

We (hopefully) get elected.

We work hard to support legislation that will truly help people, and in the process we follow the Constitution, follow our conscience, and keep listening to our constituents.

Folks, that is definitely not the playbook for Mr. Outrageous.

You can help us do the work. I hope you’ll join our effort today.

Best,

P.S. – Just when I thought I was going to melt from the heat while knocking on doors, a lemonade stand appeared like an oasis. Got a drink and a cookie – and spoke to their Mom about some issues she was having with her HOA.
