People aren’t left vulnerable to trafficking by a broken system. They are made vulnerable by a system that is designed to take advantage of them. From immigration policies that bind immigrants to their employers to ‘Don’t Say Gay’ policies, government policies make people vulnerable for traffickers to prey on them. And it’s intentional. It’s no surprise that human trafficking thrives in industries that used to rely on slave labor: agriculture, domestic work, and sex work. We still haven’t addressed the racist reliance on cheap or free labor. To eliminate trafficking, we need to overhaul the system so that everyone truly has a chance at a better life.

As I mentioned in the last email, when we take the time to sit back and listen to survivors, like the one quoted above, we are not just empowering one survivor but the entire movement. Here at Freedom Network USA, we understand the need to involve survivors at every level of the anti-trafficking movement. By working hand-in-hand with survivors, we are able to identify the most pressing concerns and propose effective solutions. Our Sheila Neville Fund ([link removed]) does just this, we use the fund to:
* hire survivors as consultants to ensure our work represents the real perspectives of survivors,
* host free professional leadership trainings to support survivors in their advocacy work,
* provide funding for survivors to attend professional trainings, including our annual anti-trafficking conference.
