It is almost too hard to imagine, but it’s true.
Extreme lawmakers in Texas and elsewhere are threatening to take away our constitutional right to travel freely between the states, and threatening people and organizations that are helping women travel out of state for abotion care.
Over the last week, I have heard many people say it just can’t possibly be true as they try to visualize a world where you need a negative pregnancy test to board a plane or drive across the state line. But it is true. And it is not a secret.
Extreme Texas lawmakers are publicizing their threats to companies, claiming they are subject to felony criminal prosecution for HR policies that reimburse their employees for out-of-state travel for abortion care and have outlined legislation they intend to bring to criminalize.
I’m going to do everything I can to protect our reproductive freedom, including the freedom to travel for the care we need. And I am proud to tell you that the House of Representatives has already responded to this effort by passing my bill to protect the right to travel for abortion care last week.

The Orwellian future that lawmakers in Texas and elsewhere are proposing is fundamentally contrary to our values as Texans and Americans. But we have a lot of work to do to ensure their vision does not become our future. There is no simple, quick solution. In a state where the legislative districts are gerrymandered, and where statewide elected officials are working every day to make this vision a reality, we need a sustained, systemic, strategic effort to take back our state from extremists who don’t represent the majority of Texans, and don’t care what they think.
That’s why we must continue our work, on this campaign and campaigns across the state. We are working now on plans to turn out the vote in TX-07, and to elect the leaders our community and our country deserve. I’m so grateful to know I can count on you to do this with us.
