** $50 Million Approved for Parks, Greenways, Nature Preserves
------------------------------------------------------------

Mecklenburg County Commissioners voted to give the Park and Recreation department $50 million to acquire land for future parks, greenways and nature preserves over the coming year. Last year Park & Rec received $20 million for land purchases.

Staff have already identified more than $50 million in properties marked as high priority for future parks, greenways and nature preserves, and plan to begin purchasing land as soon as possible

Most of the land is in 17 "areas of focus" where residents have limited access to public green space including areas to the north and northwest of uptown, areas around University City, and communities surrounding the county's outlying towns, including Davidson, Cornelius, Matthews and Mint Hill.

The advocacy group Sustain Charlotte also hopes the Park and Recreation department will use the money to connect more of the county's segmented greenway system so the investment is spread around the community in a way that benefits everyone. So far Mecklenburg County has built 62 miles of greenways with the goal to eventually have a network of 308 miles of developed greenways ([link removed]) .

The department also plans to identify a new space by the fall for skateboarders whose DIY skatepark was torn down in March to make way for a new development on the former Eastland Mall site.

I am excited about Charlotte's future and very much want to continue the work I have started as your At-Large City Councilwoman. I humbly ask for your vote in the upcoming municipal general election on July 26. Early voting ([link removed]) is underway now!

Sincerely,
Dimple Ajmera
