The filibuster is single-handedly keeping Senate Democrats from using
their hard-earned majority to pass the progressive legislation already
passed by Peter and his colleagues in the U.S. House. The GOP has used
this convenient loophole to deny civil rights to Americans for years, and
it’s long overdue that we abolish it.

Hello,
Throughout my career in both Vermont and Washington, I’ve been recognized
for my ability to work across the aisle with my Republican colleagues. For
many years, I believed there wasn’t an issue we couldn’t iron out by
listening to one another and coming together on a proper solution.
I’m writing to you today because that no longer seems to be the case. Many
of the progressive ideas we’ve been able to pass in the House have gotten
stalled in the Senate because of Mitch McConnell, the GOP, and an
outdated, abused Senate rule. Because of the filibuster, the minority is
allowed to continually block progress—even on the most pressing
matters—hurting Vermonters and Americans nationwide.
Abortion rights, gun control, voting rights—these are urgent issues that
demand our immediate attention, but Senate Republicans won’t even budge.
There is no greater threat to progressive change in America than the
filibuster, and that’s why we must abolish it immediately.

The filibuster has no place in modern-day politics. It’s a relic of the
Jim Crow era, infamously used by segregationists to block civil rights.
It’s eerie, and frankly sad, to see Senate Republicans use the filibuster
for similar purposes in 2022.
The filibuster holds us back from doing so much good for Americans. If you
send me to the Senate, I will be one more vote to end the filibuster for
good.
But this isn’t a fight I can win alone. Much of what we’re fighting for
has broad support from folks across Vermont and the entire country, but we
still fall short when it comes down to a Senate vote. Our democracy is at
stake here, and we need
everyone to make their voices heard on this one.
