Weekly Newsletter July 17th, 2022 Miller-Meeks Mailer Friends, Thank you for signing up for my weekly newsletter, where you can find updates on my work in Washington and across the Second District. Visit My Website County Fair Festivities Summers in Iowa bring frequent rain showers, high temperatures, farmer’s markets, and same day sweet corn! But summer also brings county fairs all across Iowa. Events like county fairs bring a welcome escape from the heat and provide families, often multigenerational, and members of the community with fun recreational activities. Cedar, Clinton, Davis, Lee, Henry, Louisa, Mahaska, Marion, Muscatine, Van Buren, and Wayne and counties throughout Iowa offer activities and entertainment throughout the month of July for kids, families, and people of all ages to enjoy. As the summer months continue, I encourage families across Iowa to research when and where their county fair is located. County fairs provide fun for all ages and promote volunteerism and community engagement. We continue to celebrate all things that make Iowa unique, but more importantly, home. Floor Speeches This week, I took time on the floor of the House of Representatives to address the rising inflation that the Biden Administration has imposed on hardworking families in Iowa. I also spoke this week against the radical left's abortion bill that would permit abortion up until delivery. This is only allowed in seven countries, including China and North Korea. The power to regulate abortion should be left to the voters and state legislators. To watch all of my floor speeches from this week, click HERE. Committee Work This week I was able to participate and ask questions to witnesses during the House VA Committee and the House Homeland Security Committee. My questioning during the VA Committee examined the Department of Veterans Affairs' capability and expenditures on providing community care to our veterans. Congress needs to make sure that our men and women who served receive the appropriate care following their service. Funding our military to make sure they have the necessary tools to defend our nation ins one of Congress' top priorities. I was glad to speak and ask Admiral Linda L. Fagan this past week to discuss what tools the Coast Guard needs to defend our borders from foreign adversaries. To watch my questions on Veterans' health click HERE. Legislative Roundup This week, I signed onto the No Patient Left Alone Act that would require hospitals to disclose patients of their visitation rights and restrict hospitals from denying visitation privileges on the basis of race, color, national origin, sex, or disability. I also spoke on the House floor this week in favor of S.3373 - Protecting Our Gold Star Families Education Act. When the House first passed the PACT Act in March, I spoke on the floor urging my colleagues to find a bipartisan solution. This bill is that bipartisan solution, and I am proud to support it. As a 24-year military veteran, I have seen firsthand the effects that toxic exposure has had on my fellow service members, whether that is herbicides like Agent Orange in southeast Asia or burn pits in the Middle East. Exposure to these substances can lead to severe, life-altering diseases. However, under the current system at the VA, it can be extraordinarily costly, time consuming, and in some cases impossible for a sick or disabled veteran to prove that their condition is related to the toxins they were exposed to during their military service. This bill guarantees that this will not be the case and our veterans will receive the care and treatment they are owed for defending our country. You can see my full speech HERE. Iowans in D.C. It is always great to meet with Iowans while they are in Washington! It truly is my favorite part of serving in Congress. Speaking to residents of the Second District allows me to stay informed of what is going on in their communities and what I can do to help them! This week, I had the chance to speak with Iowa Corn Growers Association and Iowa Soybean Association about how Congress can improve agriculture in Iowa and make sure that farmers receive the necessary tools to grow corn and soybeans for livestock and people. I was also fortunate to speak with groups about an issue that is very close to my heart, education. I spoke with the University of Iowa's Council for Exceptional Children to discuss education funding, mental health, and teacher shortage for special education in our school system. I also spoke with Joe and Deron who are school superintendents in the district. We were able to discuss what tools and resources our public schools need to get children back on track following the COVID-19 pandemic. Since being elected to Congress, I have been a vocal proponent for Iowa's biofuel industry and the year-round sale of E15. This clean source of alternative energy will reduce the United States' carbon footprint and help lower fuel prices across the country. That is why I was proud to meet with the Renewable Fuels Association so we could talk about our common interests. Tariffs and regulations imposed by the Biden Administration have hurt hardworking farmers in Iowa. That is why I am glad I was able to meet with the AgriBank Board of Directors so I could have the opportunity to discuss with them what recourses and financial services our farmers in Iowa need.
