It's been five months since the EU imposed new sanctions on the Burmese military.

Dear John

It's now five months since the European Union imposed any new sanctions to cut off the supply of money and arms to the Burmese military.

People in Burma have watched in disbelief the rapid pace of the imposition of sanctions in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, compared to the slow pace of sanctions being imposed against the Burmese military.

In the meantime, hundreds of thousands more people have been forced to flee their home because of Burmese military airstrikes and ground attacks.

EU members can and must do more. They must systematically identify sources of revenue and arms going to the military and impose sanctions to stop them.

Villagers from Karen State forced to flee airstrikes by the Burmese military appeal for action.
Numerous Burmese arms brokers have been exposed by Burmese advocacy group Justice for Myanmar, but haven’t been sanctioned by the EU. The British government has been sanctioning arms brokers in Burma and Russia.

Instead of taking decisive action, EU members dither and delay.

A fraction of the action being taken in response to the invasion of Ukraine would be transformative for the situation in Burma.

The plodding pace of the imposition of EU sanctions only benefits the military.

Please email all EU member states ([link removed]) asking them to impose a new round of sanctions to cut off the supply of money and arms to the Burmese military, and to keep imposing regular new rounds of targeted sanctions in the future.
