Monkeypox in NC

The COVID-19 pandemic is far from over with the subvariant of Omicron- BA.5 being the dominant strain of the virus now- and now Monkeypox has hit NC. 

According to the NC Department of Health and Human Services,  monkeypox is a rare but potentially serious, viral illness that typically involves flu-like symptoms, swelling of the lymph nodes and a rash that includes bumps that are initially filled with fluid before scabbing over. Monkeypox is typically spread by skin-to-skin contact. Symptoms of the virus may include fever, headache, muscle aches, swollen lymph nodes, chills, exhaustion and rashes that look like pimples or blisters. The virus can last anywhere from 2-4 weeks. People who are contagious should isolate at home until the scabs have fully healed and a fresh layer of skin has formed over them. To try to prevent having monkeypox the CDC recommends avoiding close skin-to-skin contact with someone who has a rash that looks like monkeypox, do not handle or touch beddings, towels or clothing of a person with monkeypox and wash your hands with soap and water or use hand sanitizer often.

NC DHHS is working with the CDC and county health departments to get vaccines for people that are high risk of exposure and/or people that have been diagnosed with monkeypox. Check your local county public health department for vaccine information.

This week in Greensboro, activists and organizers celebrated the life of the late Carolyn Coleman, a civil rights icon in NC through a Week of Peace. Commissioner Coleman passed away earlier this year at the age of 79. She was a board member of the national NAACP, an advocate for the Cure Violence program in Greensboro and was a mentor for many in Guilford County.

July 26, 2022 Election

The May primary resulted in some run off elections and some municipalities have a general election on July 26. This will not be a high turn out election unless we organize and get people to the polls! See the final municipalities and counties that have elections below:

General Municipal Elections: Charlotte, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Hickory, Mooresville and Sanford

Municipal Run Off Elections: Cary, New Bern, Rocky Mount, Statesville

Board of Education Run Off Elections: Franklin County, Jackson County District 2

Sheriff Second Primary (This happens when no candidate exceeds the 30% threshold): Graham County Sheriff (Republican), Wake County Sheriff (Democratic)

Important Dates to Know:

Mail In Ballot Portal Open Now!
June 26 - Mail-In Ballots will start to be mailed out 
July 1 - Voter Registration Deadline to vote on July 26
July 7 - Early Voting/Same Day Registration Starts (Check your county board of elections website for locations and hours)
July 19 - Deadline to request a mail-in ballot
July 23 - Early Voting/Same Day Registration Ends
July 26 - Election Day and all mail-in ballots must be postmarked by July 26

Durham Tech Food Pantry Donation Drive

Please join us and our friends at Carolina Jews for Justice on Sunday, July 24 to benefit Durham Tech Community College's Campus Harvest Food Pantry. They are looking for diapers of any size, menstrual products and "grab and go" nonperishable breakfast items to stock in their food pantry!

We'll be at the Durham Co-Op at 1111 W. Chapel Hill St in Durham from 11am-12:30pm. Please drop off and donate any items you can!

NC's Carbon Plan

The NC Utilities Commission started hosting public hearings this week in regard to the NC Carbon Plan which is a project meant to fulfill HB 951, a bill that Governor Cooper signed last fall. The bill directs the Utilities Commission to reduce our carbon footprint by 70% by 2025 and to be fully carbon neutral by 2030. There are four more hearings this summer on:

7/27 at 7PM: Buncombe County Courthouse, Courtroom 1-A, 60 Court Plaza, Asheville
7/28 at 7PM: Mecklenburg County Courthouse, Courtroom 5350, 832 E 4th Street, Charlotte
8/23 at 1:30PM and 6:30PM on Webex

Non-Binary Awareness Week

Pride Month might be over but we'll never stop lifting up the LGBTQ+ community. This week is Non-Binary Awareness Week! According to the Human Rights Campaign, the term non-binary describes someone who does not identify exclusively as a man or a woman. Non-binary people may use pronouns like they and them, but they may also use other pronouns like she and her or he and him or any other pronoun that they feel fits themselves best!

Embracing gender fluidity and challenging the binary is beautiful and should be celebrated!
