We Won’t Go Back Rally

This Saturday, July 16^th from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. there will be a rally at Riverview Park in Sebastian. This is an effort to join together and protest the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Gun Violence, Climate Change, the insurrection at the Capitol, and celebrating Human Rights and Equality for All. Bring signs, water, flags etc. We hope to see you there!

3. POSTCARDS! POSTCARDS! POSTCARDS! Come to the office and pick up a packet of 50 postcards to mail to potential voters for Cindy. We are about halfway through the target list.A huge shoutout to those who have helped get this far. We provide the names and addresses and the postcards. We would appreciate the in-kind donation of standard postcard stamps.

DEMOCRATS OF INDIAN RIVER

Democratic Women’s Club

The DWC has been trying to establish a presence at the Taxpayer’s Association monthly luncheon and we encourage Democrats to attend. The venue for the monthly luncheon has been changed to the Vero Beach Yacht Club on the first Friday of the month. The food is now served buffet style.

The next meeting on Friday, August 5^th will feature a forum of candidates running for Indian River County School Board.

The meetings are open to the public and theoretically non-partisan. Reservations may be made via their website up to 48 hours in advance of each meeting.


The DWC Book Group will continue to meet for the summer months at the Indian River County Main Library, 1600 21st Street in the first-floor meeting room.
The book selection for July will be discussed on July 22 at 2:00-4:00 pm: “The Great Dissenter: The Story of John Marshall Harlan, America’s Judicial Hero” by author Peter Canellos.

Young Democrats of the Treasure Coast

We held our meeting on Tuesday, July 12^th at American Icon Brewery, where we heard from several local candidates, including Karen Greb, who is running for State House in District 34, Danelle Dodge and Joanne Terry, both of whom are running for Congress in District 8, and Curtis Tucker, who is running for State House in District 85. At the meeting we also discussed some old business including Pride on the Block at Kilted Mermaid, the Charlie Crist Town Hall in Vero, several protests that have been and still are taking place over the reversal of Roe v. Wade, and the Juneteenth events that were held in Fort Pierce and Gifford.

We have a lot of news and several events coming up to announce:

On Wednesday, July 13th, Forest Blanton, who is running for State House in District 84, will be having his campaign kickoff party at Sailfish Brewery, located at the southeast corner of Ave A and 2nd St in downtown Fort Pierce from 6pm – 9pm for anyone who wishes to attend.

The Florida Democratic Party will be having its Leadership Blue weekend from Friday, July 15 – Sunday, July 17 at the JW Mariott Tampa Water Street, located at 505 Water St, Tampa, FL 33602. For more information, people can visit

The Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus will be holding their state convention from Friday, July 22 – Sunday, July 24, at the Westin Fort Lauderdale, located at 400 Corporate Dr, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33334. For more information, people can visit ** [link removed] ([link removed])


Downtown Friday will take place on Friday evening, July 29, along 14th Ave in downtown Vero Beach. We are encouraging any Young Dems who are able to attend this event volunteer with the Democrats or any of our party’s candidates who may have booths set up there and talk to young people who may be interested in getting involved with the Young Democrats.

We have several great candidates in the three counties that we operate in who need as much help as possible texting, phone banking, getting out mailers and knocking on doors to get people out to vote in the August primary. Anyone who can volunteer for any of our candidates is strongly encouraged to get involved with a campaign or their local DECs and volunteer to help these candidates win.

The Supreme Court’s conservative majority misconstrues Constitution

In overturning Roe v. Wade, Justice Samuel Alito wrote: “The Constitution makes no reference to abortion, and no such right is implicitly protected by any constitutional provision.” The Constitution doesn’t make reference to driving an automobile, flying an airplane or riding a motorcycle, yet we consider these rights implicitly guaranteed by our Constitution.

In Griswold v. Connecticut the Supreme Court first recognized the right to privacy. Before Griswold, Louis Brandeis co-authored a well-respected Harvard Law Review article titled “The Right to Privacy’’ in which he advocated for the “right to be left alone’’ (a phrase often voiced by conservatives who want to interfere in women’s lives by restricting their reproductive rights). Whatever happened to the philosophy “Live and let live’’? This wisdom of minding one’s own business now has been sacrificed by individuals bent on converting a free and democratic society into a theocracy.

In Griswold, the Supreme Court found the right to privacy is derived from other explicitly stated constitutional protections expressly stated in the First, Third, Fourth, Fifth and Ninth Amendments, each of which implies a right to personal privacy. In Roe v. Wade, “the Supreme Court used the right to privacy, as derived from the Fourteenth Amendment, to extend the right of privacy to encompass a woman’s right to abortion: ‘This right of privacy … founded in the Fourteenth Amendment’s concept of personal liberty and restrictions upon state action … is broad enough to encompass a woman’s decision whether or not to terminate her pregnancy’” (Cornell Law School).

‘’Her pregnancy” is indisputably a private right. It belongs neither to religious fanaticism nor to political partisanship, neither of which is empowered to restrict this basic human right. The Court’s conservative majority opinion misconstrues the scope of the Constitution’s guarantee to privacy.

As we watched the seventh January 6^th Committee Hearing this week, we heard from participants of the insurrection and how it affected their lives. It’s disturbing and difficult to comprehend the degree to which citizens believed the lies they were told. And, how many still believe it who may be our neighbors. Busloads of Republicans from Indian River County went to the Capital on January 6^th. But it is also refreshing when you hear how some citizens have come out the other side and found truth.
