Be A Role Model - Paddle Safe
Paddle Safe Week - July 23-29

Stay Safe While Paddling this Summer!

Washington State Governor Jay Inslee has proclaimed July 23-29 as Paddle Safe Week, for the fifth year in a row. Promoted by the Recreational Boating Safety program, Paddle Safe Week is a great opportunity to learn about safety awareness for next time you?re out on the water!

Paddlers should know that kayaks, canoes, and stand-up paddleboards (SUP) are subject to boating laws and regulations. Participants are urged to get educated about safety laws and best practices, boat with others, file a float plan and carry essential gear. The single, most important safety measure to paddle safely is to always wear a life jacket out on the water.

The Boating Program will be returning to T-Mobile Park on July 24th to ask Mariners Game attendees to sign a kayak in pledge to paddle safely. Paddlers of all types are invited to take the Washington Safe Boating Pledge at BoatSafeWA.Org [ [link removed] ].

Teaching Safe Paddling to Washington Youth
Paddle Safe Course on the Water

Recreational Boating Safety Specialist, Derek VanDyke, leads intro to kayaking course on the water.

Through funding provided by the No Child Left Inside Grant [ [link removed] ], the Washington State Parks Boating Program has partnered with organizations across the state to pilot a Paddle Safe curriculum. This summer, over 200+ kids will spend a day outside, learning safe paddling skills and getting out on the water with skilled instructors. They are fitted with a Coast Guard-approved life jacket, which they take home with them at the end of the day. Participants learn valuable water competencies and as part of a concerted efforts from a coalition of water-safety agencies to reduce boating fatalities and accidents.

As the program grows, it seeks to expand access to more communities across the State.?

#MindTheZone - Lake Union

Waterways of Lake Union

Be courteous, aware, and safe on Lake Union. We all love Lake Union, and as the lake gets more use, we all need to be aware of other users of the lake.

From Memorial Day to Labor Day, five Seaplane Zone buoys mark a landing and takeoff zone running from the?south end of the lake towards the north.

*When the buoys? yellow lights are flashing:*

* A seaplane is about to take off or land
* Move out of the seaplane zone: 200 feet east or west of the buoys

*At all times:*

* If nearing or in the zone, be aware of where you are
* Consider moving through the zone quickly
* Never tie up to the buoys
