It’s any family’s worst nightmare in America: someone’s life is cut tragically short by gun violence. As more details emerge about the 4th of July shooting in Highland Park, Illinois – near where I grew up – the story of 2-year-old Aidan McCarthy has hit me particularly hard.

I got to have 17 years with my son Jordan before his life was stolen from me by a man with a gun. But 2-year-old Aidan McCarthy will grow up without any tangible memories of his parents – he’ll only have pictures. And when he’s old enough to understand, he’ll struggle to comprehend why his parents were killed in a mass shooting.

Enough is enough, John. We need to put an Aidan McCarthy Assault Weapons Ban or Universal Background Checks bill in front of Republican members of the Senate immediately.

I ran for Congress as a mother on a mission: To fight for gun safety reform and keep all of our families safe.

I’m proud of the reforms we’ve passed through the House, like universal background checks and Red Flag Laws—but we need stricter legislation to curb the epidemic of mass shootings across the nation.

Up until this point, Republican legislators backed by powerful lobbies like the NRA have managed to prevent the passage of meaningful gun safety reform. It’s going to take a large-scale, grassroots movement to fight back against the big-money interests that have allowed these tragedies to continue.
