John -

We know it's been an exceptionally difficult time in the country. With bodily autonomy being all but stripped away by the Supreme Court, mass shootings continuing to occur at an alarming rate, continued economic turmoil throughout the country, while all of us clamor for Democratic leaders to do something to help us and our Democratic elected officials do their best to do just that.

But we can continue to turn that anger into action. There are still ways that you can get involved with us at YDA and in your own communities to ensure that we push our progressive values, protect our fundamental rights, and move our country forward to more just society. Get involved today!

Updates:

Congratulations Spencer Dirrig of Ohio, our new 3rd VP!

As many of you know, the position of 3rd Vice President was vacated when our own Dunixi Guereca was elected as our Democratic National Committee Representative. Since then, the Young Democrats of America Officers have been conducting a thorough search and vetting process of potential candidates for his replacement.

It is with great excitement that we announced this week, your newly appointed 3rd Vice President of the Young Democrats of America: Spencer Dirrig of Ohio!

We look forward to Spencer joining our officers and to his continued leadership in the Young Democrats of America.

"What is Self-Managed Abortion?" Training by YDA

We know we don’t need to tell you, but last week was difficult. We woke up on Friday to the news that our right to govern our own bodies and make our own healthcare decisions were taken away by a Supreme Court that does not represent the will of the people. This week we saw a rise in misinformation, chaos, and confusion in regards to abortion access and next steps.

To do our part we are thrilled to partner with a professional with years of experience in this field to present an information-sharing session about self-managed abortion on Tuesday, July 12th at 8:30pm EST.

We know that just because Roe is overturned, abortions will not stop and the need for them will not subside. We know that abortion pills are safe, effective, and private. In this session we will go over what constitutes a medication abortion, talk about the history of self-managed abortion with pills, and share the publicly available World Health Organization protocols for individuals managing their abortions.

We stress that this session does not replace advice or information from medical or legal professionals but will serve as a good foundation as we go forward in these difficult times. We will also end with a section on criminalization and a Q&A so please come prepared with your questions!

We will not go back, but rather we will move forward armed with information and ready to fight for each other.

See you on the 12th.

National Youth Leadership Opportunity to Prevent Gun Violence!

Every day, 22 children and teens are shot in an act of gun violence in the United States. And now in 2022, gun violence is the leading cause of death for young people.

And this is where Team Enough could use your help. Right now, they are looking to recruit seven new members to our Executive Council to create a diverse group of young people to help lead Team ENOUGH. They believe that diversity is a strength, and that only when everyone has a seat at the table can we build an effective movement to prevent all forms of gun violence in every community.

But they can’t ensure this diversity persists without reaching out to diverse communities.

YDA and its work towards justice, through empowering young people, share the same values that we have at Team ENOUGH. They are hoping that our participants and leaders might be interested in joining our Executive Council.

They are looking for young people ages 16-25 who have experience with organizing, advocacy or policy making, who are committed to racial justice and looking to diversify the work they are doing. Past experience with gun violence prevention is not required; applicants with experience in racial justice, environmental justice, housing, and more are encouraged to apply. That way, we can address how gun violence is an issue that touches nearly every part of American life

The best part about the Executive Council is that the time commitment expected of members is just 3 hours a week, so students can continue their work with your organization, in addition to providing their insight to Team ENOUGH. Members of the Executive Council will also have the opportunity to testify before Congress, speak at national press events, and — most importantly — lead their generation to END gun violence in America.

Applications are Due July 15th at 11:59pm EST.
