A Heavy July 4th

Over the July 4th weekend, multiple shootings happened, many being fatal. Jayland Walker, an unarmed Black man in Ohio was murdered by the Akron PD. 6 or 7 people were murdered and 30 were injured in a mass shooting in Highland Park, IL, a suburb with a large Jewish population, not too far from Chicago. Two officers were shot during a fireworks show in Philadelphia, PA. These were just a few of the many occurrences from this past weekend. 

Our hearts are heavy from the last few weeks and months. But we will continue to turn our anger & sadness into action.

SAY NO to HB 103

In the 2022-2023 fiscal budget state legislators added an anti-voter provision that will underfund elections by over $3 million. Underfunding elections will mean that there are less people to staff elections, services and security around elections.

July 26, 2022 Election

The May primary resulted in some run off elections and some municipalities have a general election on July 26. This will not be a high turn out election unless we organize and get people to the polls! See the final municipalities and counties that have elections below:

General Municipal Elections: Charlotte, Fayetteville, Greensboro, Hickory, Mooresville and Sanford

Municipal Run Off Elections: Cary, New Bern, Rocky Mount, Statesville

Board of Education Run Off Elections: Franklin County, Jackson County District 2

Sheriff Second Primary (This happens when no candidate exceeds the 30% threshold): Graham County Sheriff (Republican), Wake County Sheriff (Democratic)

Important Dates to Know:

Mail In Ballot Portal Open Now!
June 26 - Mail-In Ballots will start to be mailed out 
July 1 - Voter Registration Deadline to vote on July 26
July 7 - Early Voting/Same Day Registration Starts (Check your county board of elections website for locations and hours)
July 19 - Deadline to request a mail-in ballot
July 23 - Early Voting/Same Day Registration Ends
July 26 - Election Day and all mail-in ballots must be postmarked by July 26

Roy Cooper Signs Executive Order for Abortion Access

On Wednesday, North Carolina's governor Roy Cooper announced with Planned Parenthood's Executive Director Alexis McGill Johnson that he would sign an executive order to help protect abortion access in North Carolina. The executive order includes: 

State departments cannot require a pregnant employees to travel to states that do not have protections for pregnant people
Department of Public Safety must work with law enforcement to uphold the state law that prohibits people from blocking access to healthcare facilities
Prohibit agencies from cooperating with investigations initiated by other states
Provides protection against extradition

We're excited to take part in a week of peace in Greensboro for July 11 - 16 to honor the late civil rights icon Carolyn Coleman. 

Carolyn Coleman passed away earlier this year and was a big part of the NAACP over the last 30 years.

Durham Tech Food Pantry Donation Drive

Please join us and our friends at Carolina Jews for Justice on Sunday, July 24 to benefit Durham Tech Community College's Campus Harvest Food Pantry. They are looking for diapers of any size, menstrual products and "grab and go" nonperishable breakfast items to stock in their food pantry!

We'll be at the Durham Co-Op at 1111 W. Chapel Hill St in Durham from 11am-12:30pm. Please drop off and donate any items you can!

The repercussions of Roe v. Wade's overturn

It's been two weeks since Roe v. Wade was overturned by the Supreme Court of the United States and trigger laws have already put a stop to abortion in many states. It's not just abortion that's affected now- people across the US that are not pregnant currently are being denied medications that are not related to pregnancies due to the side effects of causing a miscarriage. People are also being denied of their birth control prescriptions or implants. Healthcare providers are having to figure out the legalities of giving their patients care if they have an ectopic or life-threatening pregnancy. In many states, any doctor that provides abortion care can be charged and sentenced to prison. As I said back in May, the overturn of Roe v. Wade isn't just about abortion. It's about control. We will be watching to see what else comes from the overturn.

I cannot stress enough, that November may be the end of democracy as we know it if we do not show up and vote in record numbers. In upcoming newsletters, we'll dig into how to use your power to organize people you know - friends, family, coworkers and other colleagues- to gather plans to show up and vote in July and November.
