Growing up, my dad worked three jobs while my mom worked nights to make ends meet. Keeping the lights on and food on the table was a constant struggle. So, I know that extra money can go a long way for families barely getting by — which is why I fought so hard to raise the minimum wage when I became Mayor of Chicago.

That fight paid off. Starting this week, over 430,000 workers in Chicago will see more cash in their checks, as the minimum wage is increased to $15/hour.

I am so, so proud of this accomplishment. The financial stability offered by increasing the minimum wage will change lives for the better. It will allow folks who are struggling like my parents did to spend more time with their kids and focus on what matters most.

John, this is a huge victory in the fight to make a more just, equitable Chicago. But we're just getting started.

My next big priority is securing paid parental leave for city of Chicago employees. Will you help me make sure every person can attain financial stability in Chicago by chipping in now?

Thank you!

— Mayor Lori E. Lightfoot
