“Forest Service: Copper-nickel mining poses threat to Boundary Waters” - Duluth News Tribune

"The study will inform the federal government on whether to place a 20-year ban on that type of mining in the watershed."

Hi,

I hope you had a restful Fourth of July weekend. With everything that’s been going on, I wanted to make sure you saw the good news.

The U.S. Forest Service issued a draft environmental assessment proposing a 20-year ban on sulfide-ore copper mining on federal lands in the BWCA watershed.

The assessment confirms what we already knew: Copper-nickel mining in the Boundary Waters poses unacceptable, catastrophic risks to our public lands.

I’m so grateful the Biden administration is taking action to protect the BWCA after it was so recklessly put in jeopardy by the Trump administration. But we have to go further.

That’s why we must pass the Boundary Waters Wilderness Protection and Pollution Prevention Act (H.R. 2794) – my bill to permanently ban dangerous sulfide-ore mining across 234,328 acres of federal land in the BWCA’s watershed.

According to my campaign team, you haven’t added your name in support of this critical legislation yet. Will you raise your voice in support of permanent protection for the Boundary Waters today?

We need Congressional action as bold as our BWCA wilderness is breathtaking. Let’s get the job done.

Thank you,
