When I was in elementary school, I got bullied every day.
Every. Single. Day.
And not just by students, but by the teachers too.
They’d call me Brontosaurus-vich.
See, my parents fled communism (from Yugoslavia and Croatia) just before I was born…
Which meant English wasn’t my first language.
I spoke with a foreign accent…
Said “does” when I meant to say “do.”
…and had a funny sounding last name to boot.
It was hard, I’m not going to lie.
Worse: My parents didn’t have a lot of money either…
Or a bunch of family in the U.S. who they could lean on for support…
But they came here anyway...
Because they wanted to live the American dream…
And to to give their son a better life than they had.
I thank God every day for the sacrifices they made for me… just to live in America.
In America, where I can live free from the brutal communist regimes my parents suffered through.
But that’s why I’m writing to you today…
Because as painful as this is for me to say, I fear that we’re losing the America I grew up in.
Not that I think America is turning into a communist dictatorship… it’s not.
But because when I was a kid, at least no one told me that America was a terrible country.
Everyone, and I mean everyone--was proud to be an American back then.
They believed that in America you had a DUTY to pursue your dreams...
And a mission to leave this nation better for future generations.
And that’s why I’m running for the United States Senate…
Because I believe that this mission continues now…
At a time when our rights to free speech, religion, and even to keep our businesses open are under attack…
I simply refuse to stand on the sidelines and watch it happen…
And if you feel the same way about our great nation…
Then I hope you’ll come out and support me on August 2^nd.
