John,

A week ago I wrote to you with sadness about a 5-month-old baby who was fatally shot in the South Shore of Chicago.

Tonight, we mourn another gun-related tragedy, the loss of at least 6 lives and over 30 people injured in a violent shooting in Highland Park.

My heart goes out to those who lost loved ones – and those who were injured.

The shock of these devastating and senseless shootings is overwhelming.

I am absolutely determined to fight to reduce gun violence in Chicago and across America.

It's outrageous that for more than 3 decades, Republicans have blocked every attempt to reduce the gun violence epidemic in our country. The time for action is NOW.

My father was with Martin Luther King the day he was assassinated.

The pain of that loss has never left him. And I feel it to this day.

Prayers alone are not enough – so I offer you a promise in addition to my prayers tonight. In Congress, I will fight like hell to reduce gun violence here in Chicago and across America.

It’s time for action.

Jonathan
