The chair that beats big healthcare!

I want to introduce you to my friend Thomas Quiter, and his dream to bring mobility to those who need it most.

Thomas was born with Osteogenesis Imperfecta type III, which is a condition that leaves his bones extremely brittle and makes mobility difficult. Fortunately, thanks to the generosity of others, he has been able to obtain a chair that has allowed him to have far more mobility than most people in his condition.

Unfortunately, due to the complex rules and byzantine process demanded by the government that is imposed upon those with mobility issues, his case is the exception and not the rule. Mobility impaired people in the United States are typically either stuck with chairs that cannot navigate even the simplest obstacles (like the threshold of their homes) or are forced to find better chairs on the secondary market, which often cost tens of thousands of dollars. Ironically, chairs that are not medically certified are far more capable and much less expensive, but insurance and government programs refuse to pay for them.

Because of the difficulties people like Thomas encounter in obtaining a good chair, many mobility-impaired people are essentially prisoners in their own homes. Unable to even navigate across the doorstep, there are scores of disabled people in this country who are shut-ins, and they miss out on even the simplest pleasures able-bodied people take for granted. Feeling alone and abandoned, many disabled people fall into depression and drug and alcohol abuse.

Thomas and I want to change that, but we need your help.

Thomas has a dream to market a chair like his at an affordable price to mobility-impaired individuals. The company that made his chair is no longer in business. But Thomas has spent months researching the design, working with engineers, including those who designed and built his chair, and working with IP lawyers. For the next stage, we need to raise $12,000, which will cover attaining a previously marketed chair, startup costs of a non profit foundation to develop and improve the design, and manufacturing and the available patents required to begin the process of producing and marketing this chair.
