Last week, the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade and while we knew it was coming, the news was still gut-wrenching. 

It’s okay to feel a range of emotions right now – I know I am. This is an attack on our fundamental rights. And it comes after years of increasing authoritarian power – in many ways fueled by Big Tech – and Big Tech is poised to profit off the criminalization of reproductive care.

The truth is, the last time abortion was illegal in the United States, there was no where near the level of digital surveillance and data collection of today. Our new reality is that digital footprints could be weaponized to target individuals seeking reproductive care. For example, right-wing state governments could easily gain access to user location data through data brokers – or by subpoenaing the platforms themselves – and use that information to prosecute those seeking abortion care.

While there are many ways for folks to take action to protect your own digital privacy and support those seeking abortions, we are leading the charge with a coalition of groups to call specifically on Google – one of the largest collectors of location data – to stop collecting and retaining people’s location data.

Google is one of the biggest collectors of sensitive data and if they stopped, it could put pressure on the rest of the industry, including data brokers.

No one should be tracked and targeted for exercising their personal health decisions. This fight is far from over. We’re proud to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with our allies in the fight for reproductive freedom – including preventing Big Tech companies from profiting off the criminalization of reproductive care.
