John,

Last weekend, I attended an event to give Vietnam Veterans the welcome home that they never received but are very deserving of. A group of over 500 people gathered at Garden Spot High School to welcome back 12 veterans who recently took a trip to Vietnam. There were hundreds of veterans in the crowd.

It was an event that's hard to describe and left me speechless. Our debt of gratitude will never be repaid to the men and women who serve our country.

One of the veterans reminded me of a poem that is appropriate for current times and a great remembrance as we approach the anniversary of our independence.
It is the Veteran, not the minister
Who has given us freedom of religion

It is the Veteran, not the reporter
Who has given us freedom of the press

It is the Veteran, not the poet
Who has given us freedom of speech

It is the Veteran, not the campus organizer
Who has given us freedom to protest

It is the Veteran, not the lawyer
Who has given us the right to a fair trial

It is the Veteran, not the politician
Who has given us the right to vote

It is the Veteran who salutes the flag,
Who serves beneath the flag,
And whose coffin is draped by the flag,
Who allows the protestor to burn the flag.
Let us never forget that we live in the greatest country in the world, thanks to our veterans.

Have a great Independence Day Weekend!
