Dear Ward 8 Residents,

I share the sentiments of many Washingtonians that are worried about their abortion rights in our city following SCOTUS's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.

The District of Columbia remains a pro-choice city where women, trans, and non-binary individuals will have access to safe and legal abortions. However, these rights are vulnerable because of our lack of statehood.

This decision to overturn Roe v. Wade will have huge ramifications and disproportionately affect black and brown women that reside in Ward 8 and across our city. As your elected official, I will continue to fight alongside Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes-Norton, Mayor Muriel Bowser, my council colleagues, and others to ensure that women's access to this essential healthcare need can remain safe and legal.

We will continue to fight for our daughters, our sisters, and those in our village that should have the right to make challenging personal decisions on their reproductive health. Women should have autonomy over their bodies and we will not allow this decision to snatch the rights of our residents.

In solidarity,

Councilmember Trayon White, Sr.

With its ruling on June 24th, the U.S. Supreme Court has overturned Roe v. Wade, dismantling the constitutional right to abortion that has stood for nearly 50 years. Roe is overturned at a time when 26 states are poised to ban abortion which will leave 36 million people who can become pregnant without access to care in their home state.

Residents of the District of Columbia face a unique peril. With no voting representation in Congress and a legal framework requiring that laws passed in the district pass a Congressional review, conservative lawmakers — who do not represent Washingtonians who are overwhelming prochoice — may try to enact federal laws specifically to deny DC residents access to abortion care.

Despite the Court’s failure to defend this fundamental freedom, abortion is still legal in DC, Maryland, and Virginia and Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC is committed to providing care to all who come to us in need.

As the oldest and largest provider of reproductive health services in the area, with health centers in DC and Prince George’s and Montgomery Counties in Maryland, Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC (PPMW) knows that personal medical decisions about people’s sexual and reproductive health should be made by patients, and patients alone. Politicians and judges should never be making personal medical decisions about other people’s bodies.

Generations before us have fought tirelessly to gain and protect the rights we have today. Planned Parenthood of Metropolitan Washington, DC will not back down. We will fight to make sure that everyone in our region has the power to control their own bodies, lives, and futures. We will continue to provide abortion to our patients and we will continue to work with local elected officials to to protect and expand access to safe, legal abortion here in the DMV, no matter what.

** DO YOU NEED HELP PAYING YOUR ENERGY BILL?
------------------------------------------------------------

** APPLY FOR ENERGY ASSISTANCE.
------------------------------------------------------------

As a District of Columbia homeowner, you can apply for financial assistance through the DC Homeowners Assistance Fund (HAF) beginning on June 22.

The fund provides financial assistance to District residents trying to make housing-related payments. Eligible homeowners impacted by COVID-19 can apply for grant funding to cover mortgage payments and other housing expenses, including utility payment assistance, up to $4,000.

It is important that you act now since the District’s foreclosure moratorium on residential mortgages expires on June 30. When the moratorium ends, foreclosure proceedings may resume unless you have a financial assistance or payment application pending approval, or you are under appeal by the HAF program. If you are in the process of being reviewed for HAF, the moratorium will be extended through September 30, 2022.

** Act now. Applications available now.
