Michigan Beer Wholesalers applaud governor for signing new bills

The Michigan Beer and Wine Wholesalers Association (MB&WWA) applauded Lt. Gov. Gilchrist for signing bills into law that will support Michigan's craft beer and wine industries, according to a news release. The laws prohibit large, foreign producers from placing burdensome rules on Michigan's beer and wine distributors. House Bills 4960-4961, also known as the Distributor Independence Act, passed the Michigan house last month with bipartisan support and more than 100 "yes" votes.

Constellation sells Ballast Point to Chicago-area brewery

In a deal that shows how much the craft-beer industry has changed in recent years, Constellation Brands Inc. on Tuesday sold the Ballast Point beer brand — which it bought for a record price in 2015 — to a little-known Chicago-area brewer for an undisclosed sum. Highwood, Ill.-based Kings & Convicts Brewing Co. announced it has reached a deal with Constellation to acquire the Ballast Point brand, as well as its production facilities and brewpubs.

Vape crisis prompts calls for greater clarity in cannabis regulation

Panelists at the 2019 Professional Liability Underwriting Society (PLUS) Conference in Washington D.C. this month said the ongoing vape crisis highlights the need for better cannabis regulation. Recent CDC laboratory test results of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid samples from 29 e-cigarette and vape associated lung injury patients submitted to CDC from 10 states found the cutting agent vitamin E acetate in all of the samples. Vitamin E acetate is an additive in some THC-containing vape products.

Online grocery shopping can increase people’s access to healthy, nutritious food

There's a new path out of the "food desert," and it's as close as the nearest Internet connection. A Yale University analysis found that most people in "food deserts" in eight states would increase their access to healthy, nutritious food if they purchase groceries online and had the food delivered as part of the federal government's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP).
