Dear John,
Last week, the Supreme Court has ruled to reverse almost 50 years of precedent and remove a woman’s right to choose. If you are feeling frustrated and upset, know that I share those feelings with you too. I express my deepest anger and empathy over Congress failing women and families yet again.
In the eyes of GOP extremists, women’s bodies continue to be a battleground for partisanship.
When we say abortion is healthcare, we mean it. When we deny life saving access, we are saying that we don’t care about victims of incest, rape, or health complications. We are endangering the lives of those who need reproductive justice and condemning struggling families to poverty. We are saying that we care more about partisan politics than about sustainable communities for women and for families.
My great grandmother made the difficult decision to terminate some of her pregnancies. Contraception wasn’t accessible and they couldn’t afford a larger family. My great grandmother could well have lost her life having an abortion at a neighbor’s apartment without a doctor’s care. Those circumstances could have left her two young children — my grandfather and great aunt — motherless. But she felt the risk was necessary.
We do not want to return to the days when people have to put their lives at great risk over a private and deeply personal healthcare choice.
Some of you may want to simply take some time to grieve and be still reading the SCOTUS decision. That is a completely valid response, and may be what you need at this moment.
Some of you may be like me though, and you will want to channel your righteous fury and frustration into action. And there is an enormous fight to win, right here in Pennsylvania.
Abortion remains legal in Pennsylvania for now, but that might change in November. We can stop them and protect our reproductive rights if we can seize control of the State Senate this year.
