John,This morning, the Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade .

Now, we confront the reality that over half of the states across the country are expected to ban or severely restrict abortion rights. Bans in Kentucky, Louisiana and South Dakota are going into effect immediately.

​​As a physician, I believe the difficult decision to have an abortion should be between a woman and her doctor -- not the government. This is an intensely personal decision, and it’s hypocritical that conservatives often speak of the need to protect freedom and privacy, yet it’s always them who try to insert themselves.

Here in Orange County, we have an opportunity to unseat my opponent Republican Young Kim -- who is staunchly anti-choice, and regularly boasts about her votes against reproductive rights.

The so-called California Pro-Life Council gave Young Kim a 100% rating for her opposition to reproductive autonomy, and the Susan B. Anthony List gave her an “A+” rating. Their endorsements, of course, come with financial support to the tune of tens of thousands in campaign checks.

Young Kim puts ideological interests ahead of the health and well-being of her constituents. Who we elect at all levels of government can have a lasting influence on our rights and freedoms. Who we choose to represent us in government has so much more influence than just where our tax dollars go – they determine who sits on the bench, how many justices we can have, and even codifying rulings like Roe v. Wade when they have the opportunity.
