The Supreme Court just ruled 6-3 in favor of the gun lobby in New York State Rifle & Pistol Association Inc. v. Bruen, an extreme and dangerous expansion of the second amendment that elevates the right to carry guns over every other right. This ruling reverses critical gun safety legislation in New York and will cause similar gun safety laws in seven other states to fall as well. Americans will die as a result of this decision.
The Supreme Court had a chance to prove that our lives are worth the full protection of the law but, instead, they became yet another corrupt institution that values guns over the American people.
Thousands of us marched across 450+ cities in the world to let our elected officials know that we’re done waiting for action. As a result, a bipartisan gun reform package was announced ONE day later. This is proof that organizing works.
We won’t let this Supreme Court decision roll back our wins that easily. Local March For Our Lives organizers and community members will rally outside of federal courthouses across the country to protest the overt political corruption that led to this decision. By overturning New York’s common sense gun law on concealed carry, the Court is stripping states of the ability to protect their citizens from gun violence. This is not about responsible gun ownership, but universal gun ownership. We have seen what happens when states do not act to limit carrying guns in public spaces.
