Congressman Al Green: The Texas Republican Party May Have Taken the Most Infamous Political U-Turn in History

(Washington, DC) — On Thursday, June 23, 2022, Congressman Al Green (TX-09) released the following statement:

“The Texas Republican party has lost its way. In the recent 2022 Texas State Republican Convention, Republicans adopted a series of priorities that are antithetical to the ideals on which our nation was founded. These measures include repealing the Voting Rights Act of 1965, holding a referendum on the secession of Texas from the United States, and abolishing a woman’s right to make decisions about her own body. They also include rejection of gender identities that do not conform to what the party refers to as biological male or female, rejection of the legitimate outcome of the 2020 presidential election, opposition to ongoing gun reform negotiations in the Senate, and withdrawal of U.S. membership from the United Nations.”

“These measures fail to fulfill the promise set forth by our constitution that all persons are created equal. They fail to uphold and protect our sacred, unalienable rights while rolling back the clock on centuries of the progress we have made together as a nation. They place democracy itself at risk, as well as tarnish our reputation as a leader and peacemaker on the world stage,” Congressman Al Green affirmed. “We should strive to have a society based on meritocracy, not on physical appearance. We need to address the great issues of our time with the ballot, not the bullet. I urge all people of goodwill to stand up against those who would roll back the clock on civil rights, human rights, and human dignity.”
