Weekly Newsletter June 19th, 2022 Miller-Meeks Mailer Friends, Thank you for signing up for my weekly newsletter, where you can find updates on my work in Washington and across the Second District. Visit My Website Protecting Our Justices No one should feel unsafe in their own home. That is why I joined as a cosponsor of H.R. 7705, the Supreme Court Police Parity Act, which passed the House and Senate earlier this week. This bill would allow the Supreme Court of the United States Police to provide the families of Supreme Court Justices with around-the-clock security protection. Our country was founded on the idea of an independent judicial branch. In recent years we have seen an increase in threats against our Supreme Court Justices and their families, and that is unacceptable. Our Justices must be able to conduct their work without fearing for their lives or the lives of their loved ones. Violence and threats have no place in our society, and I am proud to cosponsor this commonsense and bipartisan legislation. To read the full text of this legislation, click HERE. Fixing the Broken Supply Chain This past week I voted in favor of the bipartisan Ocean Shipping Reform Act, which was signed into law this week. This bipartisan legislation is the first major update of federal regulations for the global ocean shipping industry since 1998. The legislation would support American exports by establishing reciprocal trade opportunities to help reduce the United States' longstanding trade imbalance with China and other countries. This bill is a win for Iowa’s producers, consumers, and businesses. There must be a level-playing field with regards to maritime trade and regulations. We cannot allow bad actors like the Chinese Communist Party take advantage of Americans and break the rules to game the system. Especially given the record-high levels of inflation, this bill will benefit our consumers by increasing the reliability and efficiency of our currently backed up supply chains. I was proud to vote for this bipartisan and bicameral bill and strongly encourage the President to quickly sign it into law to support Iowans. To read the full text of this legislation, click HERE. Fighting for Our Farmers As inflation sours across the country, the last thing family farms need to deal with are burdensome regulations imposed by the Biden Administration. That is why I joined ninety of my Republican colleagues in a letter to President Biden calling for the Biden Administration to reverse these regulations and policy barriers to U.S. agriculture production. Iowa’s producers and consumers are struggling and the policies coming from this Administration have not helped. Broken supply chains, increased input costs, and record-high inflation are threatening the way of life of family farms across Iowa. We need to be cutting back on burdensome regulations like WOTUS and allowing producers to use their land as they see fit. I will continue to fight to ensure that Iowa’s producers are treated fairly and get the assistance they need every day. I also joined my colleagues in introducing H.R. 8069, the Reducing Farm Input Costs and Barriers to Domestic Production Act. For too long, Iowa’s farmers have been facing challenges outside of their control. The Administration seems more focused on increasing regulations and making empty promises than helping them. The Reducing Farm Input Costs and Barriers to Domestic Production Act will help Iowa’s family farms and provide them more certainty in the coming months. We all know that food security is national security, and we should start prioritizing and supporting American agriculture. To read the full text of the letter, click HERE. Funding Healthcare Initiatives The healthcare research and practices in Iowa have made great strides in medical research over the past year in the Second District. That is why I am extremely pleased that the Department of Health and Human Services is awarding over six million dollars in grants. As a doctor who worked at the University of Iowa, I know firsthand the important work they conduct across multiple fields of medicine. As a healthcare professional, I look forward to continuing to work to support increased research and development in the Second District whenever I can.
