Dear John,

157 years ago today, Union General Gordon Granger reached Galveston, Texas, with the news of the Emancipation Proclamation, stating that all enslaved people were free.

To date, Juneteenth is one of the most important annual celebrations of emancipation in American history, yet this will only be the second year it has been celebrated and recognized nationally. With Juneteenth recognized as a federal holiday, there is reason to be hopeful that winning the fight for fairness and equal opportunity is indeed possible.

We take this day to honor and support our Black communities, and Black Americans’ fight in pursuit of civil rights and a more equal country, even as they were faced with violent opposition. It is this tremendous courage towards unimaginable adversity that makes today so special.

I hope everyone has a safe Juneteenth and takes today to reflect on our country’s history.

In solidarity,

Ann Marie
