Happy Juneteenth! Today marks the day in 1865 that enslaved people in the South first learned of their freedom, nearly three years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.

I was happy to vote for this new federally-recognized holiday last year, and am proud to be acknowledging it today.

In acknowledgement of this day, we cannot forget that we still have a long way to go in ensuring fairness, equality, and opportunity for all throughout this country. I look forward to continuing to be a champion for social justice in Congress.
