Dear Neighbor,

Rising costs, from the grocery store to the gas pump, are hurting countless working families — right here in New York State, and around the country. This is a crisis for working families, like the one I grew up in, who take a real hit with every extra penny that’s spent on necessities — like feeding your children, keeping a roof over your head, and filling up the tank to get to school and work. I want to take a moment to talk to you about what I’m doing to stop this crisis dead in its tracks.

You’re probably anxious. I know my family was. Having grown up poor, I know firsthand that scarcity is no way for a family to have to live. Not in New York, and not in the United States of America. That’s why House Democrats have been hard at work trying to lower costs for working families like yours.

While the Federal Reserve raised interest rates to the highest point in almost 30 years to help combat inflation, it is far from the most effective action our government can take to lower costs for Americans. Let’s be clear: the economy is reeling from the fallout of the pandemic and Putin’s war in Ukraine, and corporations are using these crises to take advantage of consumers.

Across the economy, we see giant corporations abusing their market power to raise prices far beyond what inflation requires in order to increase their profit margins. But I’m fighting hard with my Democratic colleagues to crack down on this corporate price gouging. We already passed the Consumer Fuel Price Gouging Prevention Act to prevent Big Oil companies from taking advantage of the American people. And I’m fighting hard to pass a windfall profits tax to ensure that oil companies pay their fair share of their massive profits, and deliver those funds back into the pockets of the American people. While Americans are paying more at the pump, oil and gas companies are raking in record profits and then putting those dollars into stock buybacks. This is unacceptable.

House Democrats have acted fast to lower costs for American families. Yesterday, I helped pass the Lower Food and Fuel Costs Act to help address the supply chain crisis, lower the cost of food and gas, and ensure competition in the meat and poultry sector — because groceries simply cost too much.

Have you felt rising prices at the pump and on grocery shelves?

Now we need the Senate to act, because working families don’t have time to waste or more money to lose.

As always, my office is here to serve you. If you or your family need assistance with federal agencies, or in response to COVID-19, please call my office at (914) 323-5550.

Sincerely,
