John,

Juneteenth is coming up, and I would love for you to join me in honoring this day of celebration and action for the Black community.

June 19th commemorates the day that the last Black people who experienced enslavement in the United States were notified of their freedom. The news traveled slowly and did not reach Texas until 1865, a full two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

While we celebrate this day and support the Black community here in San Francisco, I encourage you all to keep in mind that Juneteenth should not be just one day. We should honor Black culture, fight for our equality, and share in our community 365 days a year.

As the President of the Board of Supervisors, I’ve been a leader on some of our city’s toughest issues, and I have pushed this city to live up to our promised dream of equality. We’re now providing more resources for Black residents and have reinvested $120 million toward workforce development, health, cultural, and housing programs. In the last year, we have made history by setting up a reparations task force, the first of its kind in the entire country.

We have so many wins to celebrate, John. I hope you're able to celebrate this important holiday.

Happy Juneteenth,
Shamann
