In 1980, after my first year of law school, I interrupted my studies to spend nine months helping to run a Catholic vocational school in Honduras. While there, I lived under a military dictatorship, something I thought I’d never see back home in the U.S.

Forty years later, as a U.S. Senator, I found myself barricaded in a room for hours amid a violent assault on our Capitol building, the seat of our democracy.

The January 6th committee hearings over the last few days have clearly shown that former President Donald Trump’s behavior was authoritarian to its core.

These hearings are not only meant to educate the public on the scope of Donald Trump’s involvement in subverting our democracy, but to prevent anything like this from ever happening again.

Here’s the problem: Despite our best efforts at exposing the truth of Donald Trump’s efforts to disenfranchise 80 million Americans and disrupt the peaceful transfer of power, too many Republicans in Congress -- not to mention powerful right-wing media outlets like Fox News and others -- continue to promote Trump’s “Big Lie.”

Our democracy has been badly damaged by Donald Trump’s lies and deceit. And with the Republican Party unwilling to publicly repudiate those lies, it is especially imperative to stop them from gaining power in Congress.

These hearings are designed to prevent this type of subversion from happening again. But it won’t happen without your support. Donald Trump’s delusions have exercised way too much control over our public discourse, and for way too long.
