Friend,

Ten years ago today, President Obama walked out into the Rose Garden of the White House and announced the creation of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program. He said his administration had established a new program that would stop the deportation of young immigrants who were brought into the United States as children, often referred to as “Dreamers.” Under DACA, these Dreamers would be granted temporary permission to work legally and stay in the country without the fear of deportation.

“They [Dreamers] are Americans in their heart, in their minds, in every single way but one: on paper,” said President Obama during the announcement.

Since then, DACA has proven to be an incredibly popular and successful program both for more than 600,000 Dreamers and the entire country.

Despite DACA’s success in the last decade, it is not a permanent solution. Every 2 years, DACA recipients face the risk of deportation when their permit to remain in the country expires and they have to renew their application.

Our very own Campaigns Director, Mario Carrillo, knows this all too well as his wife, Angie, is a DACA recipient.

“As many other families can relate, it’s difficult living life two years at a time, knowing that the future of DACA has long been in question,” he says. Click here to read more about Mario’s reflection on the 10th-year anniversary of DACA>>> [link removed]

It also has not been helpful the fact that Republicans have tried to block a pathway to citizenship to DACA recipients at every opportunity that they could in the last 10 years even though three-quarters or more of Americans support providing a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

It is time for a permanent solution. It is time for Congress to act and pass immigration reform.

DACA recipients go to our schools, live in our neighborhoods, work alongside us and pay taxes. 99% of them have graduated from high school and 85% are participating in the labor force, according to a new report from FWD.Us. [link removed]

Join us in commemorating the 10th Anniversary of DACA by securing Dreamers’ stay in the U.S. through a pathway to citizenship.
