Throughout my career, I’ve fought tirelessly for equality, justice, and progress for all people. As a leader in North Carolina’s state legislature, I opposed regressive laws like Amendment One, the amendment to our state's constitution that would have banned same-sex marriage and civil unions. I also voted for legislation aimed at protecting students against bullying, and called for protection for LGBTQ youth in schools. But the fight for equality is far from over yet. Republican-held state legislatures are launching an all-out assault on LGBTQ rights in states across the nation — including right here in North Carolina where our state legislature introduced their own version of the “Don’t Say Gay” bill last month. It was true when I served as a state representative, and it’s true now: I won’t stand by and watch our country be taken backwards by anti-LGBTQ bigoted leaders. I was proud to cast my vote to pass the Equality Act in the House last year. And now, I’m asking you to raise your voice and join me in putting public pressure on the Senate to get this critical legislation on President Biden’s desk. The LGBTQ community has an ally in Congress. I will always fight for the justice and the rights of all people. Thank you, Deborah |
