Senators strike bipartisan gun safety agreement
Last week, the House of Representatives took decisive action to protect our kids from gun violence. Their bill includes a ban on high-capacity magazines and bump-stocks, raises the age to buy military-style rifles to 21, promotes safe storage, and more.

Unfortunately, because of antiquated filibuster rules, their bill is unlikely to pass in the Senate.

But over the weekend, a bipartisan group of 20 senators successfully struck a gun safety framework, marking a significant breakthrough in our attempts to address the scourge of gun violence in this country.

This framework is focused on extra scrutiny for gun buyers under the age of 21, extreme risk laws, and new spending on mental health treatment and school security.

This legislation doesn’t go as far as I’d like, but it’s an important first step to stopping at least some of the mass shootings that have become far too common in our country.

Let me be clear: I would prefer that the Senate take up legislation that is more similar to what the House passed last week and what we passed in Virginia that included universal background checks and other commonsense gun safety measures.

But I’m also realistic about what’s possible given the recent history of the Senate’s attempts to pass any type of comprehensive gun reform -- and the truth is that we must take action, no matter how small it starts.

We’ve got a long way to go. But I know we can begin to move forward on this critical issue -- especially if the grassroots energy we’ve seen over the past few weeks, culminating with this weekend’s March for Our Lives rallies across the country, is sustained.

Each day that passes, more children are killed in this country. The sooner we can come together in a bipartisan way to pass meaningful regulations that keep our kids safe, the sooner we can begin to save lives.

This is the first step -- let's take it together.
