John,

Thirty years ago there was a tragic shooting at an elementary school in my community. On January 17, 1989, a gunman used a semi-automatic rifle to shoot and kill 5 innocent children and wound 32 others. He fired more than 100 rounds in three minutes, forever scarring the City of Stockton and the Central Valley.

I was five years old when that happened. Now I have a child of my own and yet nothing has changed, in fact, it's just gotten worse. Thirty years, hundreds and hundreds of shootings later, and federal action is at a standstill.

Right now, every single Member of Congress needs to look themselves in the eyes and ask: How do we keep failing? What are we doing right now when our kids are terrified to go to school? Where is our conscience?

This week I voted to pass a sweeping gun safety bill that includes common sense reforms like prohibiting the sale of AR-15s to people under the age of 21, banning magazines that hold more than 15 rounds of ammunition, and establishing stricter rules for gun storage.

On one hand, I’m hopeful that by passing this bill it pushes the Senate to come to the table and maybe we can get something done. On the other hand, I also saw 204 of my Republican colleagues vote no - they refuse to put the safety of our kids over the NRA. Frankly it’s appalling.

Please join me in pushing Senate Republicans to grow a conscience and get a gun safety reform bill done. You can add your name here.

I pray this time will be different.
