John,
As June begins, we wanted to take a moment to talk about what Pride Month means to us and our movement.
We know your inbox is probably flooded with emails from companies and organizations wishing you a happy Pride Month with rainbow logos, bad analogies, and empty promises. We won't do that. We are taking this opportunity to recommit ourselves to the fight for equal rights and unseating the people who have historically fought against the advancement of these rights.
Even if our democracy was not created by the founding fathers to serve everyone, it has come a long way since then. Through the sacrifices of fearless leaders like Marsha P. Johnson, Billie Jean King, Audre Lorde, Harvey Milk, and many more, our country has made strides in the fight for equality and ensuring that people can live their truth under the law.
But the work is not finished, and we have a long way to go until we can truly say that we are a nation of equality.
The members of the Treason Caucus have a long history of attacking the rights and lives of the members of the LGBTQ+ community and the onset of the Trump administration only emboldened this blatant homophobia. From spreading dangerous rhetoric equating sexual abuse with queerness like Lauren Boebert did, to Ted Cruz fully opposing and attacking marriage equality, and Donald Trump passing discriminatory policies like banning transgender people from serving in our armed forces, for example, electing extremists like them into office have resulted in major setbacks in LGBTQ+ rights.
We'll be clear here, we are not and will not pretend to be a leading voice in the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. However, we refuse to ignore the fact that the actions of elected leaders have consequences, and we promise to do everything we can to ensure that the dangerous members of the Treason Caucus are not only held accountable for their homophobic attacks on LGBTQ+ rights, but that they never have the opportunity to attack them again.
Thank you,
Team Never Again
P.S. One of the most important things we can do is support and uplift the organizations and voices that ARE leading the charge for LGBTQ+ rights. The Human Rights Campaign is doing groundbreaking work to create a future where people can live in truth and free of fear by mobilizing, educating, and advancing pro-equality policy and litigation.
