Message from NARAL President Mini Timmaraju |
Our hearts are still so very broken after the shocking shootings in Buffalo, NY and Uvalde, TX over the last two weeks—plus countless other incidents of gun violence that have shattered families, neighborhoods, and entire communities. We will be working with our allies in the gun violence prevention movement to connect our supporters to their efforts, and we look forward to sharing more with you soon. While our nation mourns once again, we are also bracing for the U.S. Supreme Court to overturn Roe v. Wade and unravel the constitutional right to abortion—as the Court’s leaked draft majority opinion from early May shows they are poised to do.
We expect 28 states to move to ban abortion completely once the Court issues its decision this summer. Of those, 13 states already have “trigger bans” in place, which would ban abortion automatically. Those bans will most harm people who already face barriers to accessing the care they need—Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and people of color—including members of the AAPI community whose heritage and contributions to the reproductive freedom movement we celebrate this month.
These bans will also have an outsized impact on people working to make ends meet, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, young people, those living in rural communities, and people with disabilities.
So what do we do now? Remember, the midterms are in 161 days! NARAL members will be pulling out all of the stops to elect champions for reproductive freedom and hold politicians who put anti-choice extremism ahead of our rights and freedom accountable at the ballot box.
The work of our movement continues—with energy, outrage, and purpose. Tens of thousands of NARAL members have come forward to volunteer their time in the weeks since the Supreme Court leak, and I’d encourage you to join them today.
With the midterms fast approaching, we need to send a crystal clear message: When you come for our rights, we’ll come for your seats.

Our Freedom is Under Threat Like Never Before
Earlier this month, the Supreme Court’s leaked draft majority opinion confirmed that the Court is poised to overturn Roe v. Wade and sent shockwaves through the country. Reproductive freedom has never been in greater peril, and the road ahead of us will not be easy, but we will not be deterred. What’s important to know is that this decision is not yet final, and abortion is still legal. Roe has not fallen—but we need to brace for the fight ahead.
The Radical Right won’t stop at overturning Roe—this is the first step of their agenda to ban abortion nationwide. It’s time to take unprecedented action against these unprecedented attacks on our fundamental freedoms. With 8 in 10 Americans supporting the legal right to abortion, we are the majority and it’s going to take each and every one of us in this movement to protect reproductive freedom for every body.

Combating Disinformation
2022 is quickly becoming the most pivotal year for abortion rights and access in decades. The anti-choice movement spreads the false narrative that abortion is "unpopular" and "controversial," but we know 8 in 10 Americans support the legal right to abortion. That's why NARAL Pro-Choice America is sounding the alarm about the politicians trying to control our bodies and lives with our new video, "Fight Back for Our Freedom.”

The State of Repro Freedom
State lawmakers across the country are working harder than ever to roll back abortion access and find new and increasingly cruel ways to ban and restrict abortion. According to the Guttmacher Institute, anti-choice lawmakers have already introduced over 500 restrictions on abortion this year.
Last week, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt signed into law a total ban on abortion with a vigilante enforcement mechanism modeled after Texas’ draconian SB 8. The new law will allow private citizens in Oklahoma to act as vigilantes and sue abortion providers or anyone who helps a pregnant person access abortion care. Oklahoma’s new law is the first total ban on abortion with a vigilante enforcement mechanism to be signed into law in the country, signaling a dangerous escalation of an already cruel and dystopian ban.
|
This extreme law will not only harm Oklahomans, but the millions of people who live in surrounding states whose options for abortion care are rapidly diminishing due to the relentless attacks waged by anti-choice lawmakers. It’s clear that these anti-choice lawmakers will not stop until they completely eviscerate reproductive freedom. |
