Never Forget

Like you, I spent the day reflecting on what it means to live your life and die in service to our country. Two of the soldiers I have been thinking about today are PFC Kevin Ott, and SFC Gladimir Philippe. These soldiers were killed in Iraq in June of 2003. Our family has been profoundly touched by their lives and their deaths. I come from a military family. My father spent a career in the United States Army. My Uncle did three tours of duty in Vietnam, and my twin brother was the recipient of the Bronze Star when he was in the Army. So many have given their lives so that we can maintain the freedoms and civil liberties we enjoy. I recognize that life brings with it conflict, but I want a world that knows peace, and that instead of rushing into conflict, seeks ways to be in community with others across lines of difference. It's Memorial Day. Let's never forget the sacrifice of these soldiers and the Gold Star Families. There is a huge price that has been paid for the protection of our civil liberties and our freedom.
