A few weeks ago, the leak of a draft Supreme Court opinion that would overturn Roe v. Wade caught me and my team by surprise.

If the final decision turns out to be close to this leaked draft, Roe v. Wade could be overturned in what would amount to a dangerous assault on Americans’ liberty and privacy. If Roe is overturned, Big Tech could be further weaponized to target women and reproductive care. This is especially relevant with Google’s current practice of collecting and retaining cell phone location data records on Android phones.

This week, Senator Wyden and more than 40 Members of Congress wrote to Google urging them to “stop unnecessarily collecting and retaining customer location data, to prevent that information from being used by right-wing prosecutors to identify people who have obtained abortions.”

We’re calling on Google to act today. Add your name to demand Google stop collecting and retaining customer location data from its Android phones.

There’s no law or government requirement that Google collect and keep records of its users’ data. They do it to fuel their online advertising business and profits. That’s it. 

With so many apps requiring location data to function (think maps, ride-hailing apps, weather apps and more), even the most privacy-conscious Android users are likely sharing their location information with Google. While Apple says “privacy is a fundamental human right” and does not collect user location data, Google doesn’t have a policy around the collection or retention of that information.

Join us in demanding that Google delete Android users’ location data that could be used by state governments to prosecute those seeking reproductive health care if Roe v. Wade is overturned.

We’re calling on Google to help ensure all people can safely search for and access reproductive health care. Everyone should be free to make their own decisions about their bodies, health, and futures. Accountable Tech supports that fundamental right.
